Online Platform Courses

Dear Students,

In accordance with the decision of our University's Senate, undergraduate students enrolled in the year 2019 and thereafter are required to take at least 1 course (with a minimum of 4 ECTS and not exceeding 30 ECTS) from the massive open online course (MOOC) platforms affiliated with our university during their undergraduate education period.

Only elective courses (free elective courses and departmental elective courses) can be taken from MOOC platforms.

MOOC courses are not counted towards the credit limit.

Unless the courses taken are any foreign language learning courses, the language of instruction should be English.

The courses taken can be at the undergraduate or graduate level.

MOOC courses cannot be used for MEF Merit Scholarship.

No letter grades are given for MOOC courses. In the transcript, these courses are referred to as "Personalized Learning Experience"(PLE) courses, and if the course is successfully completed, the transcript will indicate "successful (S)" without a letter grade. For a MOOC course to be considered successfully completed, the content interaction rate of each course must be at least 70%, the course certificates must be submitted to the department MOOC coordinator during the final/project period of the academic semester, and short videos summarizing the content of each course in 2-3 minutes must be submitted to the MOOC coordinator.

Steps to follow when taking courses from MOOC Platforms:

  • At the beginning of each academic semester, before the courses start, you should follow the email sent by MEF CELT regarding the application for Coursera access (Coursera seat) and then you should submit an application.

  • If you gain a Coursera seat, you should review the Coursera course list announced for that semester.

  • You should decide whether the courses you plan to take from Coursera will count as free electives or departmental electives.

  • If you want to count them as free electives, you are free to choose the courses you want from the course list announced by CELT. If you want to count them as departmental electives, you should make your selection from the course list we will share with you.

  • An elective course in our department is worth 5 ECTS. Coursera courses, on the other hand, are classified not as credits but according to how many hours they take to complete ("xxx hours to complete"). According to the calculation determined, a Coursera course that takes 25-30 hours to complete corresponds to 1 ECTS. Therefore, for a 5-credit elective course, you must complete Coursera courses totaling 125-150 hours. When you start reviewing Coursera courses, you will notice that there is not a single Coursera course that corresponds to this many hours. Therefore, you need to take and complete several Coursera courses to replace one elective course.

  • After creating your course list (bundle), you must contact our Department's MOOC coordinator Dr. Begüm Uzun (taskinbe@mef.edu.tr ) to obtain approval to start the courses.

  • If you are considering taking a course from a platform other than Coursera, you should contact the Department’s MOOC coordinator.
