Biography
Prof. Dr. M. Lütfi Öveçoğlu was born in 1957 in Manisa. He graduated from Middle East
Technical University (METU), Department of Metallurgical Engineering with Bachelor of Science
(B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in 1979 and 1981, respectively. He was awarded
the TÜBİTAK doctoral scholarship in 1981, and in the same year, he started the graduate
program in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University, U.S.A.,
where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 1984 and 1987, respectively. His Ph.D.
dissertation research work focused on “Powder Metallurgy.” After that, he worked for one year
at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Xerox PARC) and in the Netherlands and Germany
between 1988 and 1990. He was appointed as a Faculty Member in the Department of
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Istanbul Technical University in 1990 and had this
position until his retirement in March 2024. Prof. Dr. Öveçoğlu has transformed the “Powder
Metallurgy” laboratory, which he had founded for the first time at Istanbul Technical University,
into a cluster of 9 laboratories named “Particulate Materials Laboratories (PML,
www.itupml.org)” through research project grants provided by TÜBİTAK, State Planning
Organization (DPT), and Ministry of Development. Prof. Dr. Öveçoğlu and his research group
carry out scientific investigations on nanocomposites, boron/boride synthesis and end-products,
and optoelectronic/laser glasses in these laboratories. He served as Conference Chair in 3
International Ceramic Congresses in Istanbul organized by the Turkish Ceramic Association. He
has been the recipient of the TÜBİTAK Encouragement Award (Teşvik Ödülü) in Engineering in
1997, the Turkish Ceramic Federation Ceramic Honorary Award in 2010, and the Middle East
Technical University Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar Foundation Science Award in 2018. He is the
author or co-author of about 217 papers cited in Web of Science including 175 SCI papers, 240
conference papers, 4 patents, 3 book chapters, and 3 edited conference proceedings with about
2700 citations. Prof. Öveçoğlu is also listed in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 year lists of the top 2
percent of the most-cited scientists worldwide for his lifetime career achievements. He is
married to Prof. Dr. Hesna Sazak-Öveçoğlu, and they have two daughters.
